JVC Launches 2nd Generation of LCD TVS with Integrated iPod Docks : CES 2009

JVC has announced five new TeleDock series that are ready to combine two of your favorite things - your TV and your iPod. The new series includes the the 32-inch class LT-32P300, the 42-inch class LT-42P300, the 46-inch class LT-46P300, and two Clear Motion Drive models – the 42-inch class LT-42P500 and the 46-inch class LT-46P500. Each model features a neat flip-down ipod dock at the base of the set so that you can playback photos and music stored on your iPod via your TV. You can control your iPod via the system’s remote control and the system also doubles as an iPod charger even when the TV is off. The TVs themselves sport a pretty impressive feature set including full 1080p HD, digital noise reduction, and three HDMI ports. The TVs will be available in April.

LAS VEGAS, January 7, 2009 – JVC TeleDock® LCD televisions, the first to offer an integrated iPod® dock, are all-new for 2009 and feature enhanced iPod compatibility and more versatility. The new line includes five models, including two that feature JVC’s 120Hz Clear Motion Drive III technology, offering a powerful combination of performance and convenience.

For 2009, JVC TeleDock televisions offer significantly improved iPod compatibility. Each model includes a flip-down iPod dock at the base of the set, providing a direct connection for playback through the TV. Video files are easily played back on the television, music files can be played through the TV’s sound system, and photos stored on an iPod can be viewed on the TV. The docked iPod can be controlled from the TV’s remote, which includes a circular keypad with a control scheme that mimics the iPod’s control wheel. In addition, the iPod charges while docked whether the TV’s power is on or off.

When an iPod is docked, a menu appears on the TV screen. Second generation TeleDock sets display a comprehensive iPod-like menu that allows selection of music or video playback and also supports music search. During video playback, low resolution files, such as internet videos, can be displayed in a small screen mode. Higher resolution video can be shown in nine aspect modes at full screen.

For 2009, the TeleDock line offers the following enhancements:

* During music playback, song title, artist, album and genre are all displayed on the TV screen;
* With a PC connected to the TV (by PC and USB and HDMI (or D-Sub) connections ), iTunes can be displayed on the TV and synched with the docked iPod;
* When a PC is connected to a TeleDock TV, powering up the PC will automatically power-up the television;
* Music stored on the iPod can be played through the TV while watching TV programming, and the TV program or other video source can be changed while the music is playing; in addition, the sound can be swapped between the iPod and the TV program sound;
* With music playing from the iPod, photos stored on the iPod or photos stored on an external device connected to the set’s USB port can be viewed on the TV;
* During video playback, pushing the Display button will display on-screen the video title

Besides the iPod dock and playback features, JVC’s new P-Series LCD TVs are full HD (1920 x 1080), full featured high definition displays. Highlights include digital noise reduction, dynamic backlight and 1080 24p/30p output. Each features a universal remote with direct input access, a side-mounted USB photo viewer, and ATSC/QAM tuning.

Connections include three HDMI inputs, two component inputs, two S-video inputs, PC input (D-sub) and an analog video output.

The sound package delivers 10 watts per channel to a pair of JVC’s exclusive oblique cone speakers.

All five models feature a gloss black finish including the base and a new light “diffuser” front illumination. The P300 models radiate blue light while the P500 series models feature a white light radiating from the front panel. The diffuser is made of frosted acrylic and distributes the light across the bottom panel of the sets. The illumination is dimmable and defeatable in the menu.

Mitsubishi's 2009 TV Lineup Includes Intriguing 3D Sound

Mitsubishi took the wraps off of its 2009 HDTV lineup on Wednesday, highlighting a new series of LCD TVs that feature a unique speaker system that can provide a virtual surround-sound listening experience.

In addition, the company announced updates to the company's line of 3D-ready rear-projection televisions that are available in screen sizes up to 82 inches.

Mitsubishi's newly branded "Unisen" line of 1080p LCD televisions is comprised of the 151-, 153-, and 249-series models that all feature 120-Hz refresh rate technology as well as an integrated 16-channel "intelligent" speaker system that the company claims will provide a Dolby Digital 5.1 channel surround sound listening environment by directing audio waves throughout the room. The series' sound beaming technology can be optimized using an on-screen interface where the user can enter room dimension details, and the 153- and the 249-series also includes a microphone which can be placed in the prime listening position for semi-automated audio calibration.

The Unisen line will also feature a thin bezel design that measures less than one inch across, and all models meet the requirements for Energy Star v3.0. Screen sizes will range from 40- to 52-inches across, and the company expects to start shipping models to retailers in May.

A sight for sore eyes: Korean electronics giant Samsung is introducing nine new LED-LCD TVs, nine conventional LCD TVs, and five new plasmas. Televisions.com takes a first look at the specifications, providing an overview and explaining the key differences.

March 20, 2009 - The plasma market is shrinking, but Samsung continues to stand firmly by the technology - as one only three remaining plasma manufacturers (after Pioneer's departure, Samsung is now joined only by LG and Panasonic).

The two new plasma-TV go by the names "Series 6" (with three models) and "Series 8" (two models), touting high energy-efficiency, an ultra-slim construction, elegant design, full HD resolution, deep black tones, and numerous multimedia and internet possibilities.

Naturally, the three new LED-LCD series (albeit not the entirety of the 6000 series) also have these multimedia capabilities. The Koreans are plugging the new TVs as "LED TVs", effectively as a new, third class between plasmas and conventional LCD displays.

The chief attraction here:

The light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are arranged around the picture as the primary light source (Edge-LED), meaning LED-LCDs can have particularly slim casings - these Samsung models are less than three centimeters deep. The backlighting is built into the frame, instead of being behind the picture.

Further advantages of this technology:

Higher contrast and lower energy-consumption than in LCD TVs without LED-backlighting. In contrast to TVs with LEDs behind the picture, however, the edge-lit TVs do not support Local Dimming. Samsung's new LED-LCD series include nine devices in total: three in the 6000-Series, four in the 7000-Series and two in the 8000-Series.

Samsung's new conventional LCD sets seem a little unspectacular in comparison. Due for release in March and April, they will come in two series (Series 6 and 7), representing a total of nine models. Series 6 comprises six TVs between 19 and 55 inches, while Series 7 contains three specimens between 40 and 52 inches. All of the devices offer full HD resolution, energy-saving measures, and multimedia applications, as well as 100-Hz (Series 6) or 200-Hz (Series 7) technology.

All are saddled with the dreaded "entry-level" moniker, something that usually makes the job of reviewing a rather dull one. Not here; the TX-L32S10B, like its S Series siblings, sports a Full HD 1080p resolution, and plenty more besides.

And with a claimed contrast of 50,000:1, three HDMI inputs, film-like 24p Blu-ray display and a new Viera Image Viewer, and the TX-L32S10B seems anything but entry-level.

That sense carries on as soon as the set is switched on. An all-new immaculate high resolution onscreen menu pops-up and immediately starts tuning in Freeview TV channels.

The most impressive is the "Viera Tools" button, which offers a choice of kick-starting Viera Link (i.e., using your remote to control an attached Blu-ray player), pausing live TV (if you have a Panasonic "Diga" PVR attached) or starting a video, music or photo session from media stored on SD Card. Not many TVs can do the latter, though on the TX-L32S10B it is in place of a USB input.

The Viera Image Viewer software itself is impressive in its simplicity, giving one-touch access to JPEG slideshows that load immediately and play over around 20 seconds of pre-recorded, rather ponderous music that sadly can’t be replaced by your own MP3s. If the absence of music is irritating, so is the movie player, which doesn’t support DivX or any other file type we tried. It’s compatible with AVCHD video, a high-def format many HD camcorders shoot in; if you haven’t got a HD camcorder, you can overlook this feature.

But its lack of file support isn’t what officially relegates this Full HD resolution LCD TV to the entry-level ranks. The TX-L32S10B uses last year’s technology, employing Panasonic’s V-Real Pro 3 picture processing, missing out on the brand’s latest 100Hz or Intelligent Frame Creation.

Those two features are designed to reduce judder and blur in the picture, and their absence here is a worry.Depending largely on 2008 tech, it’s a toss-up between this set and its broadly similar Full HD forerunners, the £550 Panasonic TX-32LZD80 or £600 TX-32LZD85. But if your games console or Blu-ray player is itching for a playmate, the TX-L32S10B is a dependable choice.

Spin a Blu-ray disc, however, and the detail on show is quite something: concise and almost eerily realistic. Some of that effect is lost when the subject moves quickly – the fur on a polar bear, from our test disc Earth, does suffer slightly from blur, but it’s not as big a drawback as on other entry-level sets. The TX-L32S10B’s colour palette is affected slightly by the panel’s very average capability with black, though most shades seem realistic and not as over-cooked as we’ve seen on previous LCD TVs.

The TX-L32S10B’s teeny speakers deliver enough quality for a small room, but ultimately pale in comparison to sets from the likes of JVC, Philips and Loewe.
